Currently our Wildlife Specialist (DaLyn) is putting in 98 - 112 hours/week with the phone ringing off the hook before 8:00am and she’s VERY lucky if she can close up shop by 10:30pm. We’ve been very fortunate this year to have some great help from dedicated volunteers, some putting in as many as 50 – 90 hours/week.
With the growing number of injured and orphaned wild mammals coming to our facility we have also been lucky to receive the dedicated help of a couple great volunteers to our growing “mammal department”. Thanks to ALL our volunteers for keeping us, DaLyn and our animals alive and well!
Our intake of “animals in need” has been growing over the last 5 years. In 2005 we took in approximately 700 animals and we have seen this grow year after year with almost 1,700 animals in 2010. 2011 looks to be no exception with patient intakes of well over 1,200 animals so far this year.
As of July 29th, WRCNU had in its care 378 animals ranging from baby Hummingbirds to a young Golden Eagle; neonate Tree Squirrels, a Flying Squirrel, Cottontail Bunnies, a Mink baby and three frisky Yellow-bellied Marmot youngsters named “Stop”, “Drop” and “Roll”.
Our July animal count showed 250 baby passerines (song/perching birds) needing to be fed every 45 minutes (some more often) for 12-14 hours/day; 46 raptors (owls, eagles, falcons, hawks and one Turkey Vulture); 7 Game Birds (Pheasant, Quail, etc.); 49 Waterfowl (mostly ducks & geese and one baby Coot); 15 shorebirds (Willets and Killdeer); and finally, 11 mammal babies.
With all this going on we have successfully released hundreds of birds, a Blue Racer Snake and many of our mammals back into their natural habitat, but as you can see we have a lot more to go before the cold winter weather arrives.
Now more than ever WRCNU needs your support. Tax deductable donations are needed to continue the work we do and support our mission of rehabilitation and education. In 2010, 97% of your contributions went to our charitable purpose with approximately 1/3rd of our annual budget going directly to food for the animals. Please consider a tax deductable donation (http://www.wrcnu.org/pages/donate) to help us continue our work.
